'blins and 'bolds

It all started with a drawing.  My buddy called it a goblin.  I insisted it is a kobold.
"No, it's a goblin"
"Wrong!  Kobold"
He left shaking his head.  What was the difference between what I drew and what he saw?  I had to spell it out.

On a sticky note.

Eventually, my stubbornness won.  Or he stopped caring.  We both finally agreed I was drawing a kobold.  It was my kobold, by my hand, from my head, in my universe.  We cleared that issue quickly enough (Unlike Edmonton City Council and Katz Group on completely trivial matters)
Then he asked me a question.  What's the difference between a wizard and a sorcerer?

Indeed.  Great question, great thought exercise.  I gave him a totally lame reply before he gave me his answer. A wizard learned and studied his magic, while a sorcerer naturally has ability to do magic so long as he has enough will power.

"Kinda like  Iron Man and Green Lantern?" I asked
"Uh, yeah sorta.  Ok, Yeah."

Moving on.  I started thinking quietly to myself.  What is the difference between:

Summoner and Warlock
Blademaster and Samurai
Priest and Cleric
Rogue and Thief
Fighter and Warrior
Shadow Knight and Dark Paladin
Ring Wraith and Dementor
Lich King and Witch King

Flashback

On the World of Warcraft general chat, I once posed the question  "What is a female warlock called?"
"Hmmm, Warlick?"  HAHAHAHA.  LOL.  Yeah...
The correct answer is, a witch.

Of course you'll have to make sure she floats like wood.
Or really small pebbles.  And weighs as much as a duck.

Therefore...

A WITCH!!!

  1. I would argue that a summoner and warlock are similar to the wizard and sorcerer. The summoner has the natural ability while a warlock must learn through the dark arts.
A theif steals whislt a rogue kills.
    Nice Python reference.

  2. Wizard and Sorcerer
I can understand that interpretation, but it really depends on what world you're in. Some would consider Wizards as people who know how to use books, artifacts, and enchanted items, whereas Sorcerers draw from external powers.

    Summoner and Warlock
Warlock is one of those things that is a touchy subject. In one definition, it's Male Witch. In another, it's Evil Witch - not gender specific.
Summoner to me calls upon an object or being that you've created a link or bond with. Warlock would be tapping into realms conjure something.

    Blademaster and Samurai
Samurai has a culture and code of honour. They are warriors with a mission. Blademaster has mastery of weapons, both in use and in creation.

    Priest and Cleric
While both are holy, Clerics are classically warriors with training in close combat. Priests, for the most part, only have the "magic" or "miracles"

Side note: the difference between Clerics and Paladins are that Paladins are Warriors who have to follow a strict code linked to their deity as they are representatives, whereas Clerics are just trained and follow in the deity's teachings.

    Rogue and Thief
Rogue has a White streak in her hair ("Ro-Gue... DING!!!")
But seriously... Rogue has a bit of implied independence and self-sufficiency. Thieves to me are sneakier and more tricky.

    Fighter and Warrior
Warrior has evolved in include a "Tank" or damage-sponge role, whereas Fighter is a simple attacker that is on the front line.

    Shadow Knight and Dark Paladin
Paladins imply a following of a deity, whereas Shadow Knights just follow dark ways.

    Ring Wraith and Dementor
I... hm... don't know what a Dementor is, and I think Ring Wraith is VERY specific to Tolkien

    Lich King and Witch King
Liches are powerful undead who are bound to an artifact called a Phylactery. The only way to kill a Lich is to destroy their phylactery. They often hide it like in the core of a volcano, or soemthing. Usually the person willingly becomes a Lich, whereas the Witch King, if I'm not mistaken, is a cursed slave.

The best examples I can think of for the ones I really understand are:

Shadow Knight - Darth Vader - He just uses the dark side of the force
Dark Paladin - Dark Templars - They follow the darkness due to their culture and belief

Fighter - FFIV Yang - He just attacks or charges up attacks
Warrior - FFIV Cecil - He can use Cover to save weaker characters

Rogue - Robin Hood - The thievery is based on victory
Thief - Abu from Disney's Aladdin - The victory is based on thievery

Priest - Starcraft Medic - They're just there to heal and maybe look pretty
Cleric - XCom MedKit Support - Healing just happens to be what they are good at

Samurai - The police - They have rules they have to follow
Blademaster - Person working at the Gun Store/Range - They have expertise in the weapon, but they follow their own agendas

Summoner - Person who calls a Friend for a favor - They help you out, you buy them dinner later on...
Warlock - Person who calls an Escort for a favor - You buy them dinner, they help you out later on...

Wizard - Martha Stewart - She got the know-how and mad skillz
Sorcerer - Oprah - She got power and mad connections

  3. In-credible. Absolutely incredible.
Dementors are the cloaked floaties in Harry Potter.

That's all the smart things I have to say.
    Love you examples. Kakaka!

    =D
